Abstract: Imagine you have to teach a semester long course to over 300 graduate students. Instead of lecturing to 300 students in a large lecture hall you have to lecture to 35 students in a small classroom ten times over for the same two hour lectures throughout the semester. Thinking about it makes the hair stand up on the back of your head, doesn’t it? That is exactly what Dr. Marci Levine has had to do for the past 7 years in her course “Introduction to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.” It was a lecture based course taught to a small classroom size of 35 students over and over again to reach over 300 students within a semester, that is until she reached out to the Global Learning and Innovation (GLI) team at New York University to make changes. In collaboration with GLI they brainstormed solutions to make the course not only more manageable but more effective and enjoyable for the students. As a result, they designed a blended course that utilized active and peer-assisted learning activities.
