Abstract: E-learning provides multimedia capabilities for language learning over a distributed geographical region. Such software can be a critical element in the preservation of small aboriginal language groups. It may also be a vehicle for attracting aboriginal students to IT education and careers. We outline our efforts in developing a prototype software for teaching Cree syllabics to mature students with some minimal background in the Cree language. We highlight our open source free software approach as development costs can be prohibitive for small language groups. Our efforts highlight issues for the field of Human Computer Interaction in developing software for emerging indigenous user groups.
