Abstract: This study focuses on students’ experience and perceptions of online course design elements. This quantitative, survey-based study was conducted with students in undergraduate and graduate degree programs at a Midwestern University. The participants answered questions about five design elements: overview, content presentation, interaction and communication, assessment and evaluation, and learner support. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and ANOVA with effect sizes. This study revealed students’ perceptions of instructional design elements in online courses and showed if these elements are helpful for students in online courses. As the primary consumers of these course design elements, students offer a needed perspective of these design elements that provide useful feedback to instructors, professors, and instructional designers. Meanwhile, this study provided students’ perceptions of and feedback on the instrument, which has only been evaluated by instructors, professors, and instructional designers till date.
