Abstract: Principles of Effective Online Instruction is an online professional development opportunity for faculty at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. The training takes both the novice and experienced online instructors through the steps of course development, online teaching dynamics, and strategies for assessing learning. This online training has been offered for over a decade and has evolved over the years to address new challenges in online education. Participants in this online professional development • Develop online teaching skills • Learn how to use LMS effectively • Experience what it is like to be an online learner By the end of this PD, participants can • Use principles of instructional design to design/redesign and construct courses using online components or online delivery • Develop online instructional activities that foster critical thinking and promote student collaboration • Apply effective online pedagogical methods and tools to distributed teaching • Apply elements of a quality standards checklist to develop a course • Create effective instructional videos or messages for online or blended learners • Understand rules of copyright for online education. Attend this presentation to learn how to put together a similar professional development for K12 or higher ed educators who are in different stages of expertise.
