Abstract: Over a 13 week process, an interdisciplinary graduate team was tasked to develop a computer-based learning tool for emergency training scenarios. Using agile methods, the students created an interactive virtual environment to enhance the learning experience for the Fire & Safety Division at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC https://www.jibc.ca/), with a specific focus on post fire inspection. Conducting a series of qualitative user tests, the team identified a user flow to create a final product for JIBC. The final product will be used in the Level II course at JIBC where students can interact with a 3D virtual simulation of a room post-fire. The purpose is for students to recognize burn patterns, investigate the area, interact with objects, taking photos and notes, in order to identify the cause of the fire. In the virtual simulation, students can walk through the room and interact with objects (i.e., furniture, clothing, electronics, etc.), take notes using the application feature, as well as photos capturing images of objects on the scene. Based on a procedural task list, students will receive formative feedback as well a summary from the program on their progress in the simulation. This product can significantly increase training opportunities and success for fire investigators while reducing the cost of real-life burn scenarios.
