Abstract: This paper seeks to describe design considerations for improving adult learner engagement in blended online learning. It explores the “how” of enhancing learner’s engagement in the learning process as depicted in the design decisions (instructional activities and technology) used to achieve the learning goals and objectives in the blended course “A Deeper Dive into Empathy.” Learners' engagement is critical to the learning process. Engagement is often driven by the learners’ motivation based on the perceived value or interest in the instructional content (Ambrose et al 2010). To design for adult learner’s engagement in online learning environment, it is important to adopt a learner- centric approach where the learning tasks, objectives and outcomes are tied to meeting the goals/needs of the adult learner.
