Abstract: In this study, we created an online reading program for English language learners led by a pedagogical agent that is uniquely designed with two levels of perceptual arousal (high vs. low) and inquiry arousal (high vs. low), as defined in Keller’s motivational model. We then examined how the two levels of each arousal type affected the students’ perceived situational interest, three types of cognitive load (e.g. intrinsic, extrinsic, and germane), and reading comprehension.
