Abstract: This paper reports on policies covering the use of social media in higher education. Many students, faculty, and administrators are participating in social networking sites, and instructors increasingly integrate social media into their classroom in a variety of functions. However, a number of educators question the use of social media for learning, and many have concerns regarding privacy and security, and constraints due to university policy. This study examines ease of access and presentation of social networking policies of several four-year, public universities in the Mid-Atlantic area and concludes with a summary of the current status of university policies for social networking use and recommendations on how to improve the current status.
