W2: Speak Up and Listen: Learning with Audio Technologies

Workshop ID: 39253
  1. Jane Sims
    University of North Dakota

Abstract: New technologies encourage students to speak more inside and outside of class, and this increased level of engagement with the material and each other stimulates deeper learning. Benefits also apply to the instructor experience, as their recorded voice may give them more time for class interactions, or help them reach out in personal ways to students when giving assignment feedback. This workshop will first provide attendees with practice in developing narrated video tutorials and mini-lectures for students to preview before class begins so that class time may be spent on discussion and applications rather than lectures. Instructors who use audio and video feedback when grading find it easier to provide rich detail, encouraging tones, and a high level of concept analysis. Students use these same feedback techniques with peers to ask questions and review drafts. Students also utilize audio in individual study scenarios such as listening while their textbooks, articles or other materials are read to them, or speaking to see the first draft of their papers appear on the screen. The classroom that is enriched by speaking and listening options is especially beneficial for students with language or learning challenges.
